The agency this month quietly updated its provisional death tally. Showing there were 3.5 million deaths last year, or about 80,000 more than 2020's record-setting total. COVID-19 deaths rose in 2021 - to more than 415,000, up from 351,000 the year before - as new variants emerged and an unexpectedly large numbers of Americans refused to get vaccinated or were hesitant to wear masks, experts said.
