Prince Albert popularised the German tradition of the Christmas Tree and when, in 1848, The Illustrated News featured a sketch of the gathered round the yew tree at it caused a sensation and started the trend.However he wasn’t in fact the first German member of the royal family to introduce the Christmas tree to England. On Christmas Day 1800, Victoria’s grandmother, Queen Charlotte, consort of George III, invited the children of local noble families to a party at Windsor Castle where ‘in the middle of the room stood an immense tub with a yew-tree placed in it, from the branches of which hung bunches of sweetmeats, almonds, and raisins, in papers, fruits and toys, most tastefully arranged, and the whole illuminated by small wax candles.’
