As Vice President took the podium on Saturday to celebrate the 250th anniversary of the creation of the United States Army, he was keenly aware of the history of America's recent conflicts in the Middle East.

Several groups of United States soldiers who marched by the presidential box wore similar uniforms to the one he wore as a Marine when he served in Iraq.

Vance emphasized two points in his brief speech to the troops. 'Number one, we never ask you to go to war unless you absolutely have to,' he said.
