The bald eagle was driven to the brink of extinction in the second half of the 20th century but for decades its population has been bouncing back due to one of the most successful conservation efforts in history.Recent data collected in revealed the state's eagle population is soaring to new heights - with nearly 250 active nests were identified last year. This is more than twice the number counted a decade earlier - and in stark contrast to 1970 when the state had just one pair of breeding eagles.
