Charter schools and their supporters are calling on legislators to increase their seats by reissuing charters for schools that have closed — or “zombie” charters.“It is unconscionable in these past two years in particular that we would not do everything possible to make sure that our kids and our families have the best possible education choices,” said Crystal McQueen Taylor from StudentsFirstNY. “There’s actually something that we can do about this right now.”The school leaders, families and advocates rallied at City Hall Park on Wednesday, asking that the move to increase access be included in the state budget. New York City is otherwise maxed out on charters available to be issued.
