My feet are planted either side of a jagged crack, zig-zagging along the tarmac. Here it is quite narrow, but further along the road it becomes a gaping, 12ft-wide chasm, and when I gaze into the steaming black void, it seems I can see the very bowels of the Earth.Some 500 yards beneath here, there lies a scalding river of molten lava with many tortuous tributaries. For centuries it has lain benignly in the planet's core, but in recent weeks it has been rising inexorably.As you read this, it is trying to summon the energy, and find the subterranean pathways, that will facilitate its final thrust through the surface.
