The House select committee investigating last year’s Capitol riot will hold its first primetime hearing Thursday on the events of Jan. 6, 2021 — but the bid to revive public interest ahead of the midterm elections threatens to backfire if the hearing fails to deliver new bombshells.Republicans slammed the hearing before it began, calling it a “show trial” of former President Donald Trump and his allies that seeks to distract from issues, such as high inflation and rising violent crime, that are liabilities to Democrats. There are just two witnesses scheduled to testify at the heavily advertised 8 p.m. hearing: US Capitol Police Officer Caroline Edwards and British documentary filmmaker Nick Quested, who trailed members of the far-right Proud Boys group as they disrupted the certification of President Biden’s victory in the Electoral College.
