Devastating final words of man who watched US volcano erupt

'It’s going to hit me, too. We can't get out of here.'

These are the harrowing final words uttered by Navy vet Gerry Martin as he realized he was about to be engulfed by the most destructive volcanic eruption in US history.

Martin, 64, was among those monitoring increased activity at Mt St Helens when lava blasted from the ridge in on May 18 1980, killing 57 people.
