Record numbers of people are not working due to ill health. Figures from the Office for National Statistics show more than 2.5 million are on benefits because of sickness, which means that for every 13 people in work, one person is long-term sick. That's a rise of nearly half a million since the start of the pandemic, which has been attributed, at least in part, to an increased number of people with mental health problems. Most of those with mental illness are not seen by specialised services. Instead, they are managed in primary care, which puts huge pressure on GPs to diagnose, manage and treat people.
