Conservation groups have sued the United States Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), challenging its approval of expanded rocket launch operations by Elon Musk’s SpaceX next to a national wildlife refuge in South Texas without requiring greater environmental study. The lawsuit filed on Monday comes on the heels of the April 20 test flight of SpaceX’s next-generation Starship rocket, which ended with the space vehicle exploding over the Gulf of Mexico. No injuries or significant damage to public property were reported from rocket wreckage or flying pad debris. But large concrete chunks, stainless steel sheets, metal and other objects were hurled hundreds of metres from the launch pad, and a plume of pulverised concrete also sent material up to 6km (4 miles) northwest of the launch site, the US Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS) reported last week.
