Gas caused explosion that killed couple

The earth-shaking explosion that killed a Newfield couple and leveled their home Saturday was ruled to be caused by a gas build-up of some kind.

The Gloucester County Fire Marshal's Office determined that the explosion was caused by gas, but could not pinpoint the source of the gas leak or what sparked the blast, according to county spokeswoman Deb Sellitto. They also listed the nature of the explosion as "undetermined."

She said Monday that "numerous sources of ignition" set off the explosion that killed John, 73, and Carole Paladino, 72, at their Oakwood Drive home.

A spokesman for the Gloucester County Prosecutor's Office said foul play is not suspected and its detectives are not yet making any other statements about the conclusions of their investigation.

The explosion occurred at 6:15 a.m. Saturday, sending debris all over the quiet residential neighborhood and shaking homes as much as a mile and a half away.

Carole Paladino worked as a school nurse in Millville before retiring, and had taught religious education in a Catholic program, according to a friend of the couple, Wayne Ingling of Vineland.

John Paladino worked part-time at DeMarco-Luisi Funeral Home in Vineland and was active in borough government. He volunteered on the Planning Board and Cemetery Commission and once served as president of the Newfield Board of Education, according to Newfield Mayor Don Sullivan.

"I'd call John a friend," said Sullivan, who worked with him at the funeral home that's now been entrusted with their funeral arrangements.

The couple had two children and grandchildren. Sullivan said he saw the Paladinos' daughter at the funeral home Monday and extended his condolences.

Newfield is a small borough of just over 1,500 residents, and Sullivan said the tragedy has affected the whole community.

"Everyone knew them well," he said. "It's definitely a shock."

On Monday, the normally quiet neighborhood saw a steady stream of vehicles driving slowly by while drivers stared at the destruction. A tall chainlink fence was erected around the property and several workers from Palumbo Investigations, clambering in the heaps of rubble, said they were conducting an insurance investigation.

A blackened, misshapen stove sat a top one pile of debris.

Neighbors told Philly.com that the couple had a new stove delivered Friday, but Sellitto said the fire marshal's office did not say anything about the stove in his determination.
