On August 22, 1962, Charles de Gaulle and his wife were being whisked by car through Paris for a flight back to their country home when a man on the side of the road waved a newspaper. With the signal given, a group of right-wing extremists sprung into action and raked the presidential Citroen DS with gunfire. In just 45 seconds, more than 150 bullets hit the car. Three of the bullets penetrated the bodywork and passed within inches of De Gaulle's head but he and his wife Yvonne miraculously escaped unharmed.
