On December 14 last year, 800 Parisian revellers were eagerly awaiting the evening’s performance of Marathon! – a smash-hit variety show featuring electronic DJs and a dazzling light display.
So when it was cancelled at the last minute, the disappointment was palpable.
Had the lights failed? Were the speakers on the blink? Not a bit of it. Rather, the prestigious 19th-century Gaite Lyrique theatre – a short walk from the recently reopened Notre Dame Cathedral – had been commandeered by a group of West African migrants.
