New data show that in the US rose to 8.6 percent last month, surging to its highest level since 1981. The Labor Department's report on Friday showed that the rose 1 percent in May from the prior month, for a 12-month increase of 8.6 percent.The annual increase, driven by soaring food and energy prices, was hotter than economists had expected, and topped the recent peak of 8.5 percent set in March.
