San Francisco’s Innocence Commission succeeded in securing its first exoneration on Monday, as Joaquin Ciria, 61, was found not to have committed the murder for which he had been imprisoned for 32 years.Ciria was sentenced to life in prison in 1990 on a first-degree murder conviction for the fatal shooting of Felix Bastarrica. Thanks to the commission, established by District Attorney Chesa Boudin in 2020, he is set to be released.“Thirty-two years ago, you were taken away from your wife and your baby, and that is because the system failed you catastrophically,” commission chair Lara Bazelon said at a news conference. “Now at long last, you have a chance to take back your life.”
