Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg is doubling down on his soft-on-crime approach by rolling out a new division that will oversee alternatives to prison sentences in some criminal cases.Since becoming ’s district attorney in January, Bragg’s tenure been mired in controversy due to an internal memo in which he asked prosecutors in his office to seek jail or prison time in only the most severe cases - a pledge he was ultimately forced to back away from in the face of public criticism. Now, Bragg has unveiled the district attorney’s first 'Pathways to Public Safety Division,' which will review ‘opportunities for diversion’ on an individual basis to determine if suspects in criminal cases could be placed in programs like rehabilitation or psychiatric treatment rather than traditional incarceration.
