Russian President Vladimir Putin recognized two breakaway regions of eastern Ukraine as independent states Monday, escalating the crisis in Eastern Europe and laying the groundwork for the Kremlin to send troops into the disputed areas. With Putin’s announcement, Russia became the first nation to recognize the Donetsk People’s Republic (DPR) and Luhansk People’s Republic (LPR), which were created by pro-Russian militants following the chaos of Ukraine’s Maidan revolution and Moscow’s subsequent annexation of Crimea in 2014. Putin addressed the Russian people following a televised meeting of Moscow’s Security Council while shelling continued in the war-torn Donbas region.
