Rare pictures of working as a wartime mechanic are up for auction after the owner left a dying wish that they should not be sold while the monarch was alive. The series of black and white photographs are part of an archive put together by Major Violet Wellesley, who taught the Queen to drive when they served together in the Auxiliary Territorial Service. Before her death in 1971, Miss Wellesley gave strict instructions for the collection not to be sold off until after the Queen had passed as she didn’t want to risk offending Her Majesty.
