In September 1928, Winston Churchill – who would, one day, be Elizabeth II’s first Prime Minister – stayed at Balmoral as a guest of King George and Queen Mary. He wrote to his wife: ‘There is no one here at all, except the family, the household and Princess Elizabeth – aged two. The latter is a character. She has an air of authority and reflectiveness astonishing in an infant.’ King George V was enchanted by Princess Elizabeth, to whom he gave the enduring pet name, Lilibet.
