Massive amounts of seaweed are washing ashore along the beaches of South which could be carrying pathogens that cause 'leaky gut syndrome'.Known as sargassum, once it washes ashore it is a nuisance as the thick, brown algae carpets beaches, releasing a pungent smell as it decays and entangling humans and animals who step into it. For hotels and resorts, clearing the stuff off beaches can amount to a round-the-clock operation.
