Swarms of tiny sea bugs are leaving swimmers stinging in southern California, with beachgoers emerging from the water bleeding. The tiny crustaceans, identified as water-line isopods (excirolana chiltoni) are relatively common, but experts are unsure what's brought them on in such large numbers. One victim of the ravenous critters, San Diego woman Tara Sauvage, told local news outlet CBS8 she had only just dipped her feet into the water to cool them when she was attacked.
