A six-figure salary could buy a house, a comfortable lifestyle, and perhaps even a sense of financial security in most places around the US.

But in 's Bay Area, home to tech titans, leafy suburbs, and soaring costs, that same salary can qualify families as low income.

According to newly released data from the the threshold for being considered 'low income' in the nine-county Bay Area has surged so dramatically that even families earning over $150,000 a year can still qualify for affordable housing assistance.
