In the English language, a warrior is defined as a brave soldier or fighter with experience and skill in warfare. It is a compliment reserved for the most courageous in the sport of boxing, for those who can soak up unfathomable levels of pain and punishment and keep marching forward.
If you're fortunate enough to have witnessed any of the bouts that made the late Arturo Gatti an icon of the sport, either at the time or in retrospect, you will appreciate why describing him as such is an understatement.
Gatti, a former two-weight world champion from Quebec, Canada, was by no means the smoothest of pugilists compared to some of the illustrious names he stands alongside in boxing folklore. Though as his famous trilogy with great rival Micky Ward proves conclusively, few of them could match the superhuman resilience and unrelenting courage he had in the ring.
