Intelligence Committee Chair Mark Warner warned Russian President on Thursday that waging a cyberattack against a country could risk embroiling Moscow in a war against multiple Western governments -- including the United States. It comes after Putin ordered a military operation in Ukraine early Thursday morning local time, which was immediately followed by explosions across the nation and multiple cyberattacks -- a favorite method of destabilization for the authoritarian leader. But if an emboldened Putin should go further and hack into a NATO member's government systems, Warner explained, he could trigger the defense treaty's Article 5, which would compel fellow member states to defend an ally in the event of an attack.
