The Trump administration has asked Australia to pump billions of extra dollars into the defence budget "as soon as possible" to raise it to 3.5 per cent of GDP.US Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth made the request after he met Australian Deputy Prime Minister and Defence Minister Richard Marles at a regional security conference in Singapore over the weekend."On defence spending, Secretary Hegseth conveyed that Australia should increase its defence spending to 3.5 per cent of its GDP as soon as possible," a Pentagon statement released overnight says.
