A new uranium mine has opened near the Grand Canyon despite experts warning that it could wreak havoc on the environment and local water sources.A 20-year law that banned mining on the uranium-rich land surrounding the national park expired in 2023, allowing the Pinyon Plain Mine to open in December - about 10 miles south of the Grand Canyon's southern brim. The mine's proximity to the national park has sparked pushback from environmental activists who fear that radioactive chemicals will contaminate the water and pose a health hazard to people who live in the area, as well as tourists.
