The United States economy ended 2021 by expanding at a healthy 6.9 percent annual pace from October through December, the government reported Wednesday, a slight downgrade from its previous estimates. For all of 2021, the nation’s gross domestic product (GDP) — its total output of goods and services — jumped by 5.7 percent, the fastest calendar-year growth since a 7.2 percent surge in 1984 in the aftermath of a brutal recession.Previously, the government estimated growth in last year’s fourth quarter was 7 percent. The small downgrade reflected a smaller increase in consumer spending and fewer exports, the Commerce Department said.
