On the two-week anniversary of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, Biden administration officials sounded more concerned with not provoking Russian President Vladimir Putin Thursday than responding to bipartisan pleas to give Ukraine badly needed warplanes. On Tuesday, the administration declined Poland’s offer to transfer 28 MiG-29 fighter jets to a US airbase in Germany in order to help Ukraine fight off the Russian attack on the grounds it would dangerously escalate the conflict. The White House stuck to that claim even after reports emerged of Russian airstrikes on a maternity hospital and press secretary Jen Psaki warned of possible plans by Russia to unleash chemical and biological weapons.During a White House briefing Thursday, NBC News’ Peter Alexander asked Psaki point-blank why giving Ukraine the jets was “a higher risk than not providing them [when] we’re witnessing civilians die as we speak.”
