Thousands of dead fish are causing an almighty stench as they pile up around the shores of Lake Merritt in Oakland, as a result of a harmful algal bloom which is affecting San Francisco Bay.
Lake Merritt, which is the oldest wildlife refuge in North America, is home to several different species of birds and fish, but it is believed that the out-of-control algal bloom which causes a 'red tide' and a foul smell may be happening as a direct result of and warmer water temperatures.
Various species of fish have been amassing on the shores including topsmelt, bass and bat rays with one estimate suggesting there could be as many as 10,000 dead fish as of Monday afternoon.
