What's the best part of living in New Jersey? The beaches are great and Bruce Springsteen is a legend, but c'mon. It very well could be the bagels.
Maybe we're biased but it's basically a fact: no other part of the country has bagels as good as ours — the only other state that comes close is New York. If we're being honest most places don't even have bagels, they just have gross chewy rolls imitating our bagels.
So our bagels are the best. But which flavor is the best? There are classics and there are unconventional takes, but there can be only one best flavor. We grabbed bagels from Wonder Bagels in Jersey City and Knot Just Bagels in Woodbridge to put the flavors to the test. Here is NJ.com's rankings of all the bagel flavors that actually matter.
Sure, loads of salt are great on hot pretzel. But a bagel? Not so much. I’m all for a hint of salt on an everything, but when it’s the only thing on a bagel it’s just so overpowering. I imagine hell to be a pile of salt bagels with no access to water.
Popeye probably loves this bagel. I don’t. Veggies are great in a cream cheese, but not in the bagel itself. It doesn’t really taste like spinach, it just has an unpleasant taste and the texture is undesirable.
Shouts to the Quaker Oats man. You may kind of feel like a horse eating this one, but it isn’t the worst thing you'll ever chew. The oats add an interesting texture, at least?
The perfect bagel for a pastrami sandwich. If you like rye bread, you might love this. If you don’t, you’ll hate it. The caraway seeds are potent to say the least and the texture is too chewy. Points for being creative, but this doesn’t really work as an everyday bagel.
