Alex Ovechkin is the greatest scorer in hockey history at 895 goals... and counting.
The Russian icon and Washington Capitals cornerstone surpassed Wayne Gretzky’s mark of 894 career goals during Sunday’s matinee against the New York Islanders. Remarkably, Ovechkin set the new record in 1,487 games – the same number Gretzky played over his illustrious career.
The record fell on Ovechkin's power play goal early in the second period when he took the puck atop the left circle and fired a slap shot by the Islanders' Ilya Sorokin, who had never yielded a goal to 'Ovi' until Sunday afternoon. The goal cut New York's lead to 2-1 at the 7:26 mark of the second period.
