The first to be diagnosed in a close family member is always a big shock. I remember when my sister called to tell me her news, saying: ‘You know how when you go to the doctor and they ask you to fill in a form asking if anyone in your family had cancer, and we always say “No”? Well, no longer. I’ve got breast cancer.’ And as these things very often go, a year or so later it was my turn to have the same diagnosis. So it was no doubt not only a shock for King Charles’s family to hear that he has cancer – they would have also moved in an instant into the cancer zone.Of course, there would have been immediate concern over his long-term health, but it would have made them aware with a piercing clarity that they, too, might be vulnerable.
