American Airlines has sparked backlash after raising the cost of checking bags for the first time in almost six years. The airline also introduced a new rule which pushes customers to buy tickets directly from the carrier if they want to earn frequent flyer points. Passengers will now have to pay $40 to check a bag at the airport for domestic flights, or $35 if they pay online in advance, the company announced today. Previously, both options cost $30.
