Tens of millions of Americans were confronted with both brutally hot temperatures and oppressive humidity on Friday as an unrelenting heat wave has now settled over the Midwest and East Coast and is expected to last well into the weekend.More than 175 million people in the U.S. were under excessive heat warnings and advisories until at least Saturday afternoon as midday heat index readings in many spots rose well above 100 degrees Fahrenheit (38 C), the National Weather Service (NWS) said.Some of the nation's biggest cities, including , New York and Philadelphia, have opened cooling centers in public libraries and community centers for those who are unable to escape the hot temperatures.
