A new algorithm has detected a 'potentially hazardous' asteroid in a breakthrough survey that could protect Earth from a world-destroying space rock.Astronomers led by the University of Washington announced its system spotted a 600-foot-long asteroid, twice the size of the Statue of Liberty, using fewer and more dispersed observations than current methods. The algorithm, HelioLinc3D, scoured through space observations and identified 2022 SF289 on July 18, 2023 - initial images of the asteroid were captured on September 19, 2022, but it was too faint for current technology to capture.
