As President Biden prepared for a call on Ukraine with Russian President Vladimir Putin Saturday, all eyes in Kyiv were on the Russian embassy, watching for signs that staff there was leaving ahead of an invasion the White House warned could come at any time.
Moscow has decided on a “certain optimization” of staffing at its embassy in the Ukrainian capital and its consulates around the country, Russian foreign ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said Saturday. She claimed the moves were underway because of fears of “certain provocations by the Kyiv regime or third nations.”
There have been no signs of evacuations so far, according to a security guard at Russia’s embassy in Kyiv, and residents of nearby buildings, The Wall Street Journal reported.
