Shutting down the engines of a passenger plane mid-air is not an operating procedure recommended in any flight manual. But Airlines pilot certainly wasn't going by the book. The 44-year-old father of two was off-duty but hitching a lift – as pilots often do – in the cockpit of an Alaska flight from to San Francisco last month. He stands accused of attempting to grab and pull two emergency handles that would have activated the plane's 'fire suppression' system, cutting off fuel to the engines – and sparking potentially catastrophic consequences.Thankfully, he was overpowered and restrained by the crew – though not before he also tried to open an emergency exit door.
