The FDA is looking into whether a chemical used to make the majority of decaf coffee in the US should be banned.Methylene chloride binds to and extracts caffeine from the beans and is used in major chains like Starbucks and Dunkin' Donuts.But campaigners say the fact the chemical has been linked to in rats makes it illegal, pointing to a little-known 1958 rule that outlaws food additives that animal studies show could cause cancer.
