Shakers are known for their shaking worship and simple, pacifist lifestyle. From just 12 followers when founding leader Ann Lee brought the protestant movement to the US in 1774 to 6,000 members across America at their peak, Shakers have now largely vanished from society.
But the movement was brought back under the spotlight again after the film The Testament of Ann Lee was released that follows the life of Lee played by Amanda Seyfried.
The movie, directed by Mona Fastvold, who is best-known for co-writing The Brutalist, which won awards for Best Actor, Best Cinematography and Best Original Score at the Oscars last year, was snubbed for a nomination at this weekend's ceremony despite Seyfried winning praise for her standout performance.
