The individuals, aged in their 30s and 50s, were diagnosed with fungal meningitis — swelling of the membrane surrounding the brain and spinal cord caused by a fungal infection.
They had all traveled from to clinics in Matamoros, on the Mexican border, and developed the potentially fatal condition — that can cause seizures and a coma — three days to six weeks later.
