The Internal Revenue Service is backing off of a controversial partnership with facial recognition software company ID.me on Monday, just as the company began transitioning to using the new technology for new user verification.The agency's use of the controversial tech invoked bipartisan alarm in Congress, with lawmakers criticizing both the IRS and ID.me for a lack of transparency and fueling concerns it could leave millions of Americans vulnerable to cyberattacks and other security issues. 'The IRS announced it will transition away from using a third-party service for facial recognition to help authenticate people creating new online accounts. The transition will occur over the coming weeks in order to prevent larger disruptions to taxpayers during filing season,' the federal agency said.
