We’ve all heard about those people who, fearing they have something seriously wrong with them, bury their head in the sand. They put off going to their doctor — make excuses, plead that they are too busy or have other more pressing concerns— when in fact they’re simply putting off potentially bad news.
Even people with what might be called obvious red-flag symptoms delay seeing their doctor. I saw it time and time again when I worked in cancer care. Patients ignored problems in the vain hope that they would magically vanish.
In fact, it often meant their cancer simply progressed and was caught a further stage on, requiring more invasive and intense treatment.
