Drops made from a jelly found in umbilical cords could be a new treatment for sore eyes. The jelly contains cells believed to repair potentially serious damage from infections or injury to the surface of the eye.A clinical trial is under way at six hospitals across examining whether the drops can heal chronic keratitis, or inflammation of the cornea — the clear, dome-shaped tissue on the front of the eye that covers the iris. The condition can be caused by an infection in the eye or simply from wearing contact lenses for too long (allowing bacteria to breed, causing infection).
