The Washington DC Smithsonian's iconic panda exhibit will be empty before the year is out, zoo officials have announced - as tensions between the US and continue to heighten.The three giant pandas currently being kept at the National Zoo will be returned to their home by December 7, the zoo said in statements released this week - putting an end that had lasted more than a half-century.It began in 1972, when then-president Richard Nixon found himself captivated by the animals during a visit to the Zoo with his wife Patricia - an inkling he then imparted on then-Chinese Premier Zhou Enlai.
