The gruesome discovery of nine bodies and a bag on a Mexican highway last week had cartel violence written all over it.
The group of students – five men and four women – had allegedly taken part in a series of muggings and thefts in Oaxaca, seemingly angering one of the drug-selling criminal groups that operates in the area.
They were abducted, tortured and murdered for their foray into their rivals' territory, according to an insider, while their alleged boss was shot dead with a haunting note pinned to his body - 'This is what you get for being a thief.'
