Tropical Storm Michael strengthened into a Category 1 hurricane on Monday, and forecasters from the National Hurricane Center say the storm is on track to make landfall in the Florida Panhandle on Wednesday — possibly as a major hurricane.
Packing sustained winds of 75 mph, Hurricane Michael’s center was about 50 miles south of the western tip of Cuba as of 11 a.m. Monday, with heavy rain and strong winds sweeping across the island.
The National Hurricane Center said the hurricane was slowly moving north, at a pace of 7 mph. But Michael is expected to pick up speed through Tuesday night and track northeastward across the eastern Gulf of Mexico, where warm water temperatures could cause the storm system to get even stronger.
