The administration of President Joe Biden is preparing to host a state dinner for Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi this week, paying little mind to critics who say the United States is turning a blind eye to human rights violations in India under Modi’s right-wing government. In a press conference on Tuesday, White House spokesperson John Kirby told reporters that Modi’s trip to the US will affirm a “deep and close” partnership.“The visit will strengthen our two countries’ shared commitment to a free, open, prosperous and secure Indo-Pacific,” Kirby said, adding that India will be a “critical strategic partner for the United States in the coming decades”.
