Tony Bennett, the smooth singer and last in a generation of classic crooners from the United States, has died aged 96.Bennett’s publicist, Sylvia Weiner, confirmed his death on Friday, saying he passed away in his hometown of New York, The Associated Press news agency reported. Weiner gave no specific cause, but Bennett had been diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease in 2016.Bennett was born Anthony Dominick Benedetto in the Astoria neighbourhood of the New York borough of Queens.
