I noticed it in the mirror four weeks ago while drying my hair after a shower. A little red mark on my chest, just to the left of my mastectomy scar. I could have sworn it wasn’t there the day before. It didn’t hurt, but as I ran my finger over it I could feel a tiny firm nodule-like lump under the skin. I knew exactly what it was. My breast was back for a third time.A cold, nauseous feeling washed over me. I went to show my husband, Dermot, and he gave me a hug. But was it a local recurrence, where the cancer returns in the same area as the initial tumour? I’d had one of these back in 2018, three years after my first breast cancer diagnosis.
