Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro told U.S. diplomats to leave the country Wednesday, hours after President Donald Trump formally recognized the head of Venezuela's National Assembly -- and opposition leader -- Juan Guaido, as interim president.
Maduro, speaking from the balcony of his presidential palace, broke off diplomatic relations with the United States and gave diplomats 72 hours to depart.
"The imperial government of the United States is leading a coup attempt against us in order to install a puppet presidency that they can control in Venezuela," he said in a speech televised on state broadcaster VTV.
Earlier Wednesday, Trump encouraged the Maduro regime to accept a peaceful transition of power.
